Seasonal living in NovemberThe almanac, week of 2 November
The first real week of winter coats, and the one thing December won't wait for.
Seasonal living, to me, is mostly about noticing. There's a week every year when the season stops pretending, and this is it. The light goes earlier, the summer linen suddenly looks like it belongs to someone else, and the house starts asking for wood smoke and a fruit bowl that looks like a still life.
I like to treat it as a small reset. Put summer away properly, washed and folded, so it doesn't follow you around the wardrobe until March. Fill the fruit bowl with chestnuts, persimmons and the very last quince. Light something smoky in the evening and let the week be slower than it wants to be.
And then the thing I always forget until it's too late: the people. December fills up quietly and then all at once, and the dinners you actually care about are the ones you book now.
