Diptyque Tam Dao sandalwood perfume bottle with three fragrance layering steps

How to layer perfumeHow to layer scent

Building a scent wardrobe, part one: three rules and a sandalwood to start with.

Learning how to layer perfume sounds like something only experts do. It isn't. It's just finding two scents that have something in common and letting them talk to each other.

Start with the one you already wear: that's your base. Add a second that shares a note with it, and wood, amber or musk are the easiest bridges. Then apply the heavier one first and the lighter one on top, so the deep notes sit close to the skin and the bright ones arrive first.

If you want a second bottle to play with, Diptyque Tam Dao is a lovely place to start: a creamy sandalwood with cedar and cypress, soft enough to sit under almost anything and interesting enough to wear on its own.
